Welcome to the Fall 2018 issue of MechE Force. I am pleased to share with you a snapshot of our many activities and accomplishments in the last several months.

This is truly an exciting time here in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The fall semester always brings new faces – this year, we welcome 57 undergraduates and 52 graduate students to the department. We wish both our new and returning students much luck in the academic year ahead.

Our department has set the groundwork for meaningful progress in the coming months. We recently hired Dr. Rui Ni, who will be an exciting addition to our fluid dynamics group. We will collaborate with the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering to expand our experimental facilities in the newly acquired Stieff Silver Building. We will broaden our external advisory board to foster new industrial connections, strengthen the MSE program by adding new courses, and work with students in the new WSE Doctor of Engineering program. And, of course, we will continue to do what we do best: carry out innovative research and prepare the next generation of mechanical engineers to enter the workforce.

I look forward to keeping you posted on all the remarkable endeavors of our students, faculty, and alumni. I also invite you to explore our website, as it is constantly being updated with the latest news and information. If you’d prefer a more interactive experience, our Facebook page is a great place to learn about upcoming events, view photos, and interact with other Mechanical Engineering students, alumni, and friends.

As you read about our recent activities, please know that we are eager to hear from you as well. Feel free to email us at mech_eng@jhu.edu, call 410-516-6782, or even mail a letter to the Department of Mechanical Engineering, 223 Latrobe Hall, Johns Hopkins University, 3400 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21218.
