The Barman lab, led by Ishan Barman, a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been awarded the Oracle for Research Cloud Grant.  Oracle for Research awards enable global projects to solve the world’s most complex problems through cloud computing and an open research community.

Metastatic disease is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality. This grant will fund Barman’s research to develop minimally invasive procedures for early metastatic cell detection.

Barman’s team will use 3D Optimal Diffraction Tomography (ODT) and Raman spectroscopy to map and study the varying structures of cancer cells derived from primary tumors or liquid biopsies. Using these techniques, the team aims to achieve label-free optical phenotyping which will facilitate early detection of metastatic cancer cells.
