Alex Bodell, MSE ’10 is bringing the farm to your kitchen counter top.

Alex is using the skills and knowledge he learned in his degree’s mechanics of materials and energy engineering coursework as a leader in product development and engineering for Intelligent Light Source (ILS), a startup that produces controlled-environment LED lighting and focuses on commercial agriculture.

ILS has combined their commercial lighting technology with an automated irrigation system to create a simple countertop hydroponic growing system called “Counter Crop,” a convenient, clean, and dirt-free way to grow vegetables and greens. As their website at http://countercrop.com states, this has the potential to transform the way the world feeds itself.

Just like Alex has done, you too can learn skills that could transform the world as an engineering student at Hopkins.alex bodell
