Step 1 prepare the system

Remove all the grips and pull rods.

Make sure the crosshead is high enough to allow for safe removal of the chamber.

Turn the whole system off (see Manual complete shut off).

Remove all possible accessories from the frame.

The remote (manual command) and the remote holder can be removed.

Make sure to remove the load cell.

<fc #ff0000>Do not move the frame with the load cell on it.</fc> The load cell is one of the most calibrated and fragile sensor of the machine. It is easily broken.

Unplug all cables.

Step 2 Separate the frame from the chamber

The frame and the chamber are two separate components and should not be moved together.

Slide the chamber backwards a little and remove the two screws on the bottom attaching the rail to the frame. The chamber is particularly heavy, use a crane to suspend the chamber from the hoops on the top of the chamber. Put it on the side. The controller cannot be separated from the chamber and has to move with it.

Step 3 Move the frame

The frame, in theory, could stay on the table and the whole thing be moved at once. However, check the size of the doors and elevator you will be going through/in. Most doors in JHU won't accommodate such a height.

This means that the frame needs to be downed onto a forklift to transport it. Some are available in the basement of Latrobe.

the frame should be manipulated with care. Even though it is very heavy, it is fragile. The heavy part is the base. The frame should be lifted either from the base or from the crosshead, as recommended by MTS (see the instructions below)

DO NOT BEND THE COLUMNS OR USE THEM AS LEVERS!

Step 4 Move the frame, table, and chamber to new location

Make sure the table is leveled as much as possible. Put the frame back on the table and the chamber in position, using the suspended crane system.

Step 5 Place the chamber - <fc #ff0000>This is the tricky part.</fc>

The holes at the bottom and top of the chamber need to be aligned with the axis of the machine. It is very important that the pull rods and pins DO NOT touch the sides of the chamber holes while moving. This will introduce a large error in all future tests.

Place the chamber in almost the right position but keep it suspended. Place the screws attaching it to the frame but do not tighten them yet.

In order to check for alignment, you will need to have on hand a load cell with all the screws, washers, sleeves, necessary to mount it, and pull rods.

Make sure the crosshead is high enough. Mount the load cell on the crosshead and the pull rods through the hole of the chamber.

Put the chamber down. Look from above and below and make sure nothing touches, especially the pins and nuts at the junction of pull rods.

Move the chamber slowly until you find the right position.

Once it is at the right place, put it completely down, CHECK AGAIN the alignment. Slide it back a little and tighten the screws.

Slide it forwards and make sure it is locked on both sides.

Step 6 Assemble the system

Put back all the cables, the computer, the chamber controller,….
