**Take care of your trash, don't leave it for the following students to try to guess the possible hazards of your solutions and specimens.** “**Hazardous material:** Any chemical which poses a hazard to health, property, or the environment **shall not** be deliberately discarded with the general waste or by any route into the sanitary sewer system.” JHU Policy Laboratory waste disposal HSE805 ==== Liquids ==== Trash liquids should be kept in closed “waste bottles” labeled with a sticker indicating product, manufacturer, the start date, and your name. * DO NOT mix products in the trash (solid or liquid) * DO NOT put liquids in the Biohazard trashcan When the waste bottle is full or too old, liquids should be brought to the chemical waste disposal of the University * HOURS: Thursdays 10:30-11:30am & 1-2pm * Fill out the online form at the following address [[https://orchid.hosts.jhmi.edu/hse/webtools/wasteform/|https://orchid.hosts.jhmi.edu/hse/webtools/wasteform/]] * Estimate the quantity roughly if you don’t know. * Put Latrobe as a pick up place. * Print the form and put it in the lab with the product. * Before they come, make sure * to wear appropriate personal protections, gloves, labcoat, shoes, ... * to bring the form otherwise they won't take it * That EVERYTHING is labeled (to the maximum of your ability). **ANY UNKNOWN LIQUID BROUGHT TO THE WASTE DISPOSAL WILL BE CHARGED $450.** **Chemical waste instructions displayed in the lab** {{ :chemical_waste.pdf |}} ==== Solids ==== * Any contaminated solids (INCLUDING GLOVES) should be left to evaporate under the hood for at least 48h (longer if you think it is necessary). * After evaporation, they can be placed in the biohazard trashcan. * DO NOT mix products in the trash (solid or liquid) * DO NOT put liquids in the Biohazard trashcan When a sharp container is about 3/4 full, put gloves on, close it and put it in the biohazard trash can. **When the biohazard box is 3/4 full (the trash should NEVER reach the top of the box)** * Put on gloves, close the plastic bag inside the box, close the box with tape. * Write the date, the hour, the name of the PI, and the room it came from (Latrobe B1 or Latrobe 216) on it. * Take the box in the hall of Latrobe, in front of the elevator 1R. **not on Friday or if it is raining!** **Trash instructions displayed in the lab** {{ :trash.pdf |}} ==== Waste & Recycling Requests ==== For waste and recycling requests (e.g. requesting additional biohazard boxes or bags), visit [[http://www.fm.jhu.edu/recycling|http://www.fm.jhu.edu/recycling]] or contact Leana Houser, the Homewood Solid Waste and Recycling Manager: lpitkev1@jhu.edu
