Congratulations to David Kraemer on being the Whiting School of Engineering’s recipient of the 2018 Johns Hopkins Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award. The award is given annually to faculty throughout the university who excel in the art of teaching. Kraemer was presented the award at the 28th Annual Whiting School of Engineering Convocation Awards Ceremony on Monday, May 7.
Kraemer, an associate teaching professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was nominated by students and fellow faculty for his dedication to undergraduate education at Johns Hopkins.
Kraemer’s teaching interests include dynamic systems and instrumentation, numerical methods, fluid mechanics, and renewable energy. This year, he taught several courses: “Robot Sensors and Actuators” with the associated lab component, “Introduction to Fluid Mechanics,” “Electronics and Instrumentation” with the associated lab component, and the new course, “Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Computing.” Next year, he will be teaching a new graduate course, “Simulation and Analysis of Ocean Wave Energy Systems.”
This is not the first time Kraemer has been recognized for his commitment to teaching. Prior to joining the Hopkins faculty in 2013, Professor Kraemer won several teaching awards as a professor at University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
Kraemer earned his bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from University of Notre Dame. He went on to earn a master’s degree from University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in civil engineering from Johns Hopkins University. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Kraemer serves as Chief Technical Advisor for the Wave Energy Conversion Corporation of America (WECCA).
