Alissa Murphy is a lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. An instructor in a new undergraduate course called Multidisciplinary Design, she works with teams of students from disparate engineering backgrounds to tackle design challenges presented by project partners.
Before joining Johns Hopkins in 2018, she served as a mechanical engineer at a Bay Area medical device start-up, brainstorming, building, and testing surgical tools. She spent 2014 to 2018 with Stanford University’s d.school, teaching, and coaching design thinking and creating relevant curriculum. From 2010 to 2014, she co-managed a local design team in Myanmar to develop income-generating products for rural farmers.
Murphy received a BS in Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins in 2005 and an MS in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University in 2007.
