Johns Hopkins University’s annual celebration of engineers’ contributions to society begins today and runs through Friday, Feb. 23 on the Homewood campus.
Organized and hosted by the Whiting School of Engineering, this year’s Engineers Week’s offerings range from a talk by a Nobel Prize-winning NASA astrophysicist and a salary negotiating strategy workshop to an event designed to introduce girls to engineering, speed networking, and a resumé roundtable.
First up is HopHacks, the annual Johns Hopkins “hacking” marathon, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m. today in Hodson Hall. More than 300 undergraduate and graduate students from universities across the country will spend 36 hours consuming countless cups of coffee and eating delivery pizza while racing against the clock to develop new tech solutions or products. Sponsors include Bloomberg, Google, Facebook, Booz Allen Hamilton, and more. The winning team will take home the $1,024 prize on Sunday afternoon.
E-Week’s signature event, Theta Tau’s Tower of Power, is set for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb 20 in the Glass Pavilion. Sponsored this year by Bloomberg LP, the annual event challenges teams of Johns Hopkins undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni, as well as students representing several area middle schools, to engineer the tallest possible towers from boxes of uncooked spaghetti and bags of marshmallows.
