We are excited to welcome new faculty member Ryan Hurley to the Department of Mechanical Engineering!

Dr. Hurley completed his Ph.D. in Applied Mechanics at the California Institute of Technology in 2015. He will join the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute at Johns Hopkins University as Assistant Professor. Prior to joining Hopkins, he held an appointment as Assistant Research Professor while he finishing postdoctoral studies at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Dr. Hurley’s research aims to unravel the relationship between microstructure and macroscopic properties in structurally complex materials using experiments, theory and simulations. He is currently studying the role of microscale contact and force networks on the mechanical properties and failure processes of granular materials. He has also recently studied the rheology of granular flows and the dynamic behavior of jointed rock masses. His work has earned him several honors, including a 2013 Best Poster Award in Computational Mechanics from EMI and the 2014 Young Stress Analyst Award from BSSM. Dr. Hurley is currently a Principal Investigator on a Laboratory Directed Research and Development grant at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Welcome, Professor Hurley!
