We are excited to announce that graduate student Santosh Paidi has received the Tomas A. Hirschfeld Award from the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS). This award recognized outstanding graduate students who presented work at the 2017 FACSS SciX conference, held from October 8 -13 in Reno, Nevada.
Paidi’s winning talk was titled “Decoding breast cancer-induced stromal adaptations in pre-metastatic lungs with label-free Raman spectroscopy.” Paidi works in the lab of Assistant Professor Ishan Barman. His research is focused on applications of Raman spectroscopy and multivariate data analysis to develop novel quantitative approaches for addressing unmet needs in the molecular study of cancers.
Prior to commencing doctoral study at Johns Hopkins, Paidi graduated from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in 2014 with a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Aerospace Engineering. As an undergraduate, his research was directed towards understanding the effects of inert gas dilution on the characteristics of hydrogen combustion. Overall, his research efforts have resulted in 9 peer-reviewed publications in journals such as Cancer Research, Analytical Chemistry and Scientific Reports. He has been awarded the Whiting School Doctoral Fellowship and Mechanical Engineering Departmental Fellowship by Johns Hopkins University, Molecular Medicine Tri-Conference Student Fellowship and Undergraduate Research Award by IIT Bombay in recognition of his work.
