Each year, senior mechanical engineering students spend countless hours scheming, planning, and executing designs to solve real-world problems brought to them by a sponsoring client as part of the Senior Design course.

The culmination of the course is Senior Design Day, where students showcase their hard work during presentations to their classmates, sponsors and a panel of American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) judges. The following students received awards for their efforts:

Best Presentation: Laura Scavo, Team MASK (Sponsor: JHU Center for Bioengineering Innovation and Design). Laura improved the design of the hood portion of the JHU Ebola suite to passively provide defogging and air circulation.

Best Project: Kiana Duncan, Colin Egan, Colin Friedman, Joseph Hirsch, and Suzie Kellogg*, Team WRVU (Sponsor: Walter Reed National Military Medical Center).Team WRVU developed a new version of a patented elbow prosthesis for use with active duty and veteran amputees.

Best Project, Honorable Mention: David Gorman, Samantha Lott, Patrick Reilly, and Rachel Tsao, Team OUSD (Sponsor: Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics, Corrosion Policy and Oversight). Team OUSD developed a fast, modular way to mask off large or small areas both inside and outside an airplane, for painting.
