chirikjianCongratulations to Professor Gregory Chirikjian and Professor Wooram Park (University of Texas at Dallas) on winning the 2014 IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering (T-ASE) Best Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering. Their paper, titled “An Assembly Automation Approach to Alignment of Noncircular Projections in Electron Microscopy”, proposes a modified cross-correlation method to align a large number of images from the same class in single-particle electron microscopy of highly nonspherical structures, and show how this method fits into a larger automated pipeline for the discovery of 3D structures.

The award was established in 2004 to recognize the best paper of T-ASE published in the previous calendar year. All papers published in the T-ASE during the previous calendar year are eligible.

Winners are selected by judging on the following criteria: technical merit, originality, potential impact on the field, clarity of presentation, and practical significance for applications. Awards are presented at the annual IEEE Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) or the IEEE Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE).
