dkraemer2014Congratulations to Dr. David Kraemer, who is part of a team that is competing for the Department of Energy (DOE)’s Wave Energy Prize. The DOE is offering a $1.5M prize to the top team that demonstrates game-changing performance enhancements in ocean wave-energy conversion.

Dr. Kraemer is the Chief Technical Advisor for the Wave Energy Conversion Corporation of America (WECCA) that has made the cut to the top 20 teams out of the 94 teams that entered.

WECCA’s wave-energy device consists of three barges that are hinged together; energy is extracted from the relative pitching motions of the barges in waves.

The next step will be creating a 1/50 scale model, and conducting numerical simulations. Then the top 10 teams will make 1/20-scale models to be tested in the large maneuvering basin wave tank at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Carderock, MD for the final competition. Dr. Kraemer is working on the numerical simulations of the device.
