The 2014 Senior Design team sponsored by the JHU Military & Veterans Health Institute and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center received an Honorable mention at the Military Health System Research Symposium in late August.

The team, consisting of Joshua Charest, Andrew Frazier, Matthew Jorgensen and Michael Leddy was challenged with providing a way for athletic veterans with trans-tibial amputations to maintain a cool residual limb.

The team solved this by embedding cooling tubes that circulated ice water around the limb in a custom made silicone liner. They tested the liner with two veterans, one a bi-lateral amputee and one single limb amputee. Both veterans noticed that their residual limb was more comfortable during activities.

The team has filed a provisional patent on this new technology and they are further developing it in conjunction with their client Todd Sleeman at WRNMMC.

Congratulations, gentlemen!
